The Melbourne University Kendo Club strives to teach and practice Kendo in a way that contributes to the personal growth of our members. We believe that the practice of Kendo develops respect and sincerity in our relationships with others, and persistence and courage in meeting and overcoming challenges, both on and off the dojo floor.

The first training session of what was to become the Melbourne University Kendo Club was held in the Fred Tait Building on April 17th 1989.

In the 32 years since then, the club has grown and prospered to become one of Victoria’s largest kendo clubs.

We provide a fun, challenging environment where we encourage and push each other to higher achievement.

Our club motto is「剣心一如」Ken Shin Ichi Nyo which translates to “the sword and heart and one and the same”

The sword cannot wield itself; it is controlled by a person. A person is controlled by their heart. Hence, the sword is an expression of the person’s heart. Practicing correct and proper Kendo will lead to being a correct and proper person.

How you practice Kendo is a reflection of who you are. A person who is unsettled practices Kendo that is also unsettled. A person who is focused practices focused Kendo. By reflecting on the type of Kendo that we practice, we learn about who we are, and vise versa.

By knowing who we are today, we can make a better judgment on what we can improve tomorrow.
